Yes, paper is my ‘jam’. True story, I cannot buy just one of anything “paper.” I love anything and everything library, bookstore, books, papers and pens/pencils. Every back-to-school season I load up on school supplies and notebooks as if I am going away to college again. My desk drawers? Crammed with blank sketch books and reams of dotted paper, my bookshelves overfloweth. I can stay in a gift or bookstore until closing time, completely forgetting where I am and why I am there, until I’m asked to leave. I even have a Pinterest Board devoted to paper-ish pictures: Rock-Paper-Scissors where I PIN pictures of paper and ephemera!
This year I resolved to address my paper and book addiction by either using my supplies or giving them away to someone who would use them. I realized I’d prefer my legacy to be a Ross-Fleming Library wing versus an episode on hoarders! However, this personal ultimatum caused me to crack open one of the many journals I bought over the years and began WRITING things down. It was unfamiliar, painful, and more than one journal ended its life ripped and recycled.
Fast forward a few months and writing in a journal has become a daily practice. I’ve edited my journals down to under a dozen, and I use a variety of techniques, like bullet-journaling, or letter writing, or gratitude statements or rants. I have a journal for each part of my life now; work, home, family, travel, blog ideas, and more.
I now have a legitimate excuse to linger just a little longer in a bookstore. In the meantime, after I’m done writing, I’ll take another sip of my coffee and look out the window in appreciation of my view this morning. So yes, Jane Austen, I know my own happiness, it’s paper.
